Between 9 August 1971 and 5 December 1975, 1,981 people were interned. 1,874 internees were from a republican background, while 107 were from a loyalist background. Many internees were held in an internment camp at Long Kesh. Women were also interned in Armagh Gaol.

A look at this pages photo stream or a simple google search will giv ena idea of the type fo building we lived in for most of us over a decade of our lives. The catch from 1975 onward was that the huts were a quick 'throw up'job after the big fire.

Although there were some variations across the compounds/ cages, they generally consisted of four Nissen huts which were designed to accommodate 80 men, with half of one hut serving as a dining/ recreational area. The photos show the widespread destruction caused by the burning of the camp and subsequent riots, which saw the British army use extreme force - including the lethal and then experimental CR gas - to subdue republican POWs. Following the introduction of internment in August 1971, Long Kesh - a disused WWII airfield near Lisburn, south of Belfast - was used as an internment camp. Long Kesh was also used for sentenced republican and loyalist prisoners from 1972. The H-Blocks, eight in total, first opened in 1976.
